The New 2018 Mandela Coin

 

The South African Mint, a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) announced the launch of two new limited edition coins which pay tribute to struggle icon and former president, Nelson Mandela. The new 2018 Mandela Coin.

The new coins serve as a commemoration of Mandela’s legacy and what he stood for during the Apartheid era.

Notably, 2018 marks exactly a century since the birth of Mandela and the Mint aims to celebrate this milestone.

The two coins are visibly different in appearance, the one coin being bronze while the other is sterling silver.

The R50 bronze coin also depicts Mandela in his youth as a young lawyer while the R50 sterling silver coin portrays him as SA’s first democratic President.

 

Pricing of The New 2018 Mandela Coin

The bronze alloy coin is priced at R127 and tells its own tale, says Tumi Tsehlo, MD, South African Mint.

“Pricing the coin was a conscious tribute to Nelson Mandela’s legacy and our way of paying it forward. To celebrate 100 years since the birth of Mandela, and in remembrance of the 27 long and lonely years, he spent in prison, the entry-level bronze alloy coin is priced at R127.

With every coin purchased, R27 (VAT-free) will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation”.

Notably, the two coins are also the second installation in the “Celebrating South Africa” theme. The first installation being the 2017 OR Tambo Centenary range.

According to the SA Mint, the series serves to educate individuals on SA’s struggle icons.

“South Africans must never forget her heroes who stood up and against injustice and inequality to usher a new era of freedom and democracy. We hope their stories will continue to be told and heard every time someone holds a Madiba or Tambo commemorative coin,” adds Tsehlo.

“Collectability is a function of craftsmanship, quality and theme amongst other personal preferences. The Mandela series no doubt ticks all the boxes and will be an amazing addition to any collection, not only because of its design but also because of the enduring value of the theme.”

The coins can be purchased for the South African Mint’s retail store in Centurion, Elegance Jewellers in Melrose Arch and various pop-up stores in malls around South Africa.

Tselo added that they will be announcing new products in the Mandela Centenary range.

The South African Police Service invites applications from all races and gender for Enlistment in the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP) from young, energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit individuals, dedicated to serving their country by pursuing a career in policing.

Basic enlistment requirements: Young South African men and women who apply to be appointed as a member in terms of the South African Police Service Act, 1995 (Act no 68 of 1995) must:

  • Apply on the application form determined by the National Commissioner and affirm under oath or by way of a solemn declaration that the information furnished in the application form is true and correct;
  • Be a South African citizen of which documentary proof must be furnished;
  • Be at least eighteen (18) and under thirty (30) years of age of which documentary proof must be furnished (APPLICANTS MUST BE UNDER THE AGE OF 30 YEARS BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS ADVERTISEMENT);
  • Be in possession of a Grade 12 school certificate or National Certificate (Vocational) Safety in Society of which documentary proof must be furnished (2017 matriculants are welcome to apply and before enlistment proof of successful completion of Grade 12 (Senior Certificate) must be submitted. As an interim arrangement kindly submit proof of Statement of Symbols, reflecting a pass rate for Senior Certificate); An aggregate of “4” and above in English may serve as an advantage;

  • Not have been declared unfit to possess a firearm;
  • Be prepared to serve anywhere in the Republic;
  • Must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 30; and
  • Male applicants must have a Waist circumference £ 102cm and Female applicants must have a maximum waist circumference of 88cm.

All applicants will be subjected to a fitness, psychometric and integrity testing as well as medical evaluation and will be interviewed during the recruitment, selection and enlistment process. The SAPS will also verify the criminal record, qualifications, driver’s license, citizenship and residential address of each applicant. Applicants in possession of valid driver’s license for at least a light motor vehicle will receive preference. Applicants will be subjected to a vetting process which will include security screening and fingerprint verification. Applicants who previously served in a Government Department and who were dismissed as a result of misconduct are excluded. In view of the physical demands of the Basic Police Development Learning Programme, applicants with chronic diseases, physical impairments or any other health condition that may lead to interruption of the training programme, will be excluded from participation in the programme. Such applicants’ failure to disclose the conditions will result in their withdrawal from the programme on the determination thereof.

The Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act, Act 37 of 2013 requires that all new appointments in the South African Police Service as from 31st of January 2015 provide a buccal (inside cheek) sample in order to determine their forensic DMA profile. The forensic DMA profile derived from the sample will be loaded to the Elimination Index of the National Forensic DMA Database.

Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP)

Successful applicants will participate in the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (hereafter referred to as the PROGRAMME) for a period of 21 (twenty one) months. Remuneration for Induction Phase and Basic Training Phase will be a stipend of R4500-00. The PROGRAMME shall consist of three phases:

  • Induction Phase
    • One (1) month at a designated police station;
  • Basic Training Phase
    • Eight (8) months Basic Training at a designated SAPS Academy (with practical training at a designated police station);
  • Probation Phase
    • After successful completion of the Induction and the Basic training Phases, the police trainee shall be appointed as a member of the Service under probation for a period of 12 months.

During the Basic Training Phase of the PROGRAMME the Service shall provide free training gear, meals and accommodation to the police trainee. Trainees will also receive medical aid benefits for the duration of the 21 month Basic Training Learning Programme. Upon successful completion of the Basic Training Learning Programme, trainees will be considered for permanent appointment as members of the SAPS.

Remuneration during the Probation Phase (on completion of the training period) will be on the first notch of Band A (currently R164 109 per annum). In addition to this, appointees will receive the applicable service benefits.

Core Functions: Successful candidates will serve as functional police officials. As such, they will be deployed to carry out one or more of the following functions: • Prevent, combat and investigate crime, • Maintain public order, • Protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic and their property, • Uphold and enforce the law

KZN Dept of Education: Graduate / Internship Programme 2018 / 2019

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is implementing the Internship Programme as part of its contribution to skills development initiatives as expressed in the NSDS, NGP and PGDS objectives by inviting unemployed graduate to participate in the programme that will provide them with valuable work experience and increase their opportunities towards employment. The programme offered is fully structured and the Department will pay successful interns a monthly stipend /  allowance.

Applications are therefore invited from interested applicants in possession of a relevant Degree from a recognized University or National Diploma from a University of Technology and TVET Colleges, to undertake workplace training that shall run for the period of 12 months in the following fields /  areas:

In addition, applicants must be:

  • South African citizen
  • Unemployed graduates between the age of 18-35 without relevant work experience

  • Unemployed graduates who have not been exposed to the programme before
  • Prepared to enter into a contractual agreement with the department
  • Available for placement in the Departmental offices across the Province
  • Diploma from TVET Colleges / Letter from DHET declaring competence and confirming graduation
  • Proof of Registration with the relevant body /  council
  • Proof of Residence must be attached

NB: For qualifications that require registration with Professional Council / Bodies, proof of registration must be attached.

How To Apply

While applicants can be placed in all offices across the province, but for Reference Numbers C, E and F, applicants shall be placed at Head Office only. Applications should therefore be submitted in the Z83 form obtainable from any government office, indicating the Reference Number of the field applied for and must include certified copies of the following documents which should neither be faxed or e-mailed:

      • South African Identity document
      • A recent detailed CV
      • Degree or Diploma, and Matric Certificate
      • A full academic record indicating individual modules or courses

If any of the documents mentioned above is not attached, the applicant will automatically be disqualified. Where an applicant has not been contacted within 2 months from the closing date, then the applicant must kindly consider that their applications have been unsuccessful. The Department reserves the right to place or not to place applicants based on its needs and requirements.
