Muvhango kisses its old ways goodbye

Popular SABC2 soapie M

uvhango will celebrate its 3000th episode with a wedding extravaganza not seen before in the soapie.

Producers of the multilingual soapie saw it fit to introduce a new twist to the storyline wherein the beloved James Motsamai ties the knot to an older businesswoman who has two kids.

The wedding, which was shot at Garden Venue Boutique in Northriding, Johannesburg, was between James Motsamai, played by Dingaan Mokebe and Moliehi Zikalala, played by Vathiswa Ndara.

Mokebe said when Motsamai decided it was time to tie the knot, he felt it would only be fair if he went for someone who was matured, instead of going for a young woman.

“The couple have known each other for some time and both of them felt they were ready to settle down since his fiance’s husband had passed away,” he said.

The ceremony takes a sour turn when two gunmen storm in, causing havoc.

On the day of the shoot, executive producer and creator of the long-running show Duma Ndlovu was on the ground directing, something he had not done in a while.

“The episode is a milestone and it marks a new era on Muvhango. We want to explore new horizons and do something we have not been able to do, to appeal to the younger audience,” said Ndlovu.

He said the show had always been associated with older people but he now wanted it to relate with the younger generation by having a new, younger cast.

“We want to make sure that we speak the language young people understand. We want to say ‘we are young and vibrant’,” he said.

He said as part of the new era, the soapie will have younger main characters.

Asked if the new direction will include a departure from the old culture where kissing scenes were not allowed, he said he was no longer involved and has young people running the show.

“I can’t say you will not see [kissing scenes]. I am no longer involved, I have young people running the show for me. They are doing all kinds of things.

“If Africans see themselves kissing, so be it. I don’t think there is a law that says no kissing

Gospel stars in dispute over unproyaltiesaid

The music industry has always been a shady place when it comes to the dealings that have taken place outside of the spotlight.

These things are usually expected out of the more popular genres but a recent exposé has shown that even dirtier dealings have been taking place in the gospel music circles. The latest victim? Gospel artist Hlengiwe Mhlaba. The singer has come forward to share that R8.6million of her royalties have been stolen by fellow gospel artist and head of Big Fish Music Sipho Makhabane.

After hiring copyright lawyer Graeme Gilfillan though, it came to light that the amount was actually more. Out of her 90 songs that were collecting royalties through SAMRO only 24 were paying her 16.7% of what was due to her. These included her rendition of ‘Rock of Ages’, ‘uJesu Uyalalela’ and ‘Mhlekazi’. The remaining 83.3% was given to an unknown DP, this very same DP who was taking the royalties from her 14 albums APART from the millions Makhabane was receiving from SAMRO without a formal contract in place.

The ‘Rock of Ages’ singer had been recording multi-platinum albums for Sipho Makhabane since 2005 but never signed a contract with him. When she was given her sales and copyright statements by Makhabane a statement of R39.2 million with R4.5 million of that having been paid over 10 years. She believed that that money was for live performances and pointed out only 2 times when Sipho Makhabane paid her moneys amounting to R250 000 which he said were for royalties.

City Press, through an investigation of Makhabane’s sales figures, came to find that Hlengiwe was owed R8.5million for just pure CD sales. This would bring her total amount owed to R16million and this is without taking into account the digital side of things.

Considering the healing power usually associated with gospel music it’s sad to see that our artists are still subjected to exploitation of this calibre. We do hope that a resolution is found that will make sure that the affected party receives what’s rightfully hers.

WINNIE MADIKIZELA-MANDELA HAS DIED

Struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has passed away at the age of 81..

The apartheid icon has been ill for a number of years and was most recently admitted to Milpark Hospital due to an infection affecting her kidneys.

The last time the stalwart was in a hospital was in October 2017 for a knee surgery, which she had a full recovery from.

During her ex-husband’s 27-year imprisonment for his fight against apartheid, Madikizela-Mandela campaigned for his release and the rights of black South Africans, undergoing arrest and banishment. White minority rule ended in 1994.

The former South African first lady was born in the village of Mbongweni, Bizana, in the Transkei.

The Mandela family issued a statement on Monday, stating, “It is with profound sadness that we inform the public that Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday 2 April 2018.

“She died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of the hospital since the start of the year. She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones.

“Mrs Madikizela-Mandela was one of the greatest icons of the struggle against Apartheid. She fought valiantly against the Apartheid state and sacrificed her life for the freedom of the country. Her activism and resistance to Apartheid landed her in jail on numerous occasions, eventually causing her banishment to the small town of Brandfort in the then Orange Free State.

“She kept the memory of her imprisoned husband Nelson Mandela alive during his years on Robben Island and helped give the Struggle for justice in South Africa one its most recognisable faces. She dedicated most of her adult life to the cause of the people and for this was known far and wide as the Mother Of The Nation.

“The Mandela family are deeply grateful for the gift of her life and even as our hearts break at her passing, we urge all those who loved her to celebrate this most remarkable woman.”

The family said it would release details of the memorial and funeral services once these have been finalised.
